Bacteria that find a suitable contact surface under favorable conditions will attach and adopt a biofilm phenotype. Factors such as surface properties and external disruptions can therefore affect biofilm development. To demonstrate this, a Staphylococcus aureus biofilm adhesion assay was performed comparing 96-well microplates with different bottom surfaces for growth and subsequent retention of biofilm cell mass following perturbation from aspiration.
