High Throughput Screening (HTS) Technologies
High throughput screening (HTS)involves the integration of technologies (microplate detectors, automation, and software) that allow for the rapid assay of thousands of compounds in the search of biological activity that may be useful in drug development or other processes. Detection technologies used in high throughput screening include TR-FRET, FRET, fluorescence polarization, luminescence and absorbance, and require sensitive and versatile multi-mode microplate readers. Most of these assay technologies, such as fluorescence polarization, are ratiometric which allows the correction of some of the most common assay interferences. In addition, fluorescence polarization and other detection techniques are usually homogenous, and as a result only require a simple mix and read process, without lengthy wash steps. With high throughput screening, millions of compounds can be screened and stored in large compound libraries for the researcher to access.
