May 21, 2009

BioTek Instruments, Inc., was named as one of three finalists for the 19th annual Deane C. Davis Outstanding Business of the Year Award. The award, named for former Vermont Governor Deane C. Davis (from 1969-1973), recognizes Vermont businesses showing an outstanding history of sustained growth while also demonstrating a steady commitment to the State, including environmental stewardship, community involvement and employee relations. Vermont Business Magazine and the Vermont Chamber of Commerce created and govern the annual award. As a first-time nominee, BioTek excelled in each of the following criteria:

  • Continued growth in number of employees and/or sales

In the past five years, BioTek has seen significant growth in their total sales, also evidenced by an increase in the number of employees and the opening of several international offices. BioTek continues to reinvest in their employees to increase their scientific expertise and expand growth opportunities. In return, BioTek employees share a remarkable longevity, with an average tenure of more than eleven years.

  • Commitment of company resources, including employees to community projects

In addition to corporate donations to charity organizations and nonprofits, BioTek encourages and rewards employees to give back to the community. BioTek also encourages employee participation in local charitable events and fundraisers. As an active member of various local and market-specific groups, Briar Alpert, President and CEO leads by example and encourages employees throughout the organization to participate in associations and groups that foster collaboration, innovation and technological growth.

  • Recognition of the environment as a natural and economic resource for Vermont

BioTek’s Green Team was formed to guide and educate the company on new ways of safeguarding and improving Vermont’s precious natural environment. Coordination with outside organizations and the creation of eco-friendly policies and procedures have led to a reduction in waste and an increase in use of green products and services. As with all other practices, BioTek encourages their international offices and partners to think and act in the same responsible manner.

  • Creation of a positive work environment for all employees

By encouraging open feedback for continual improvement, and clearly articulating company, departmental and individual goals, BioTek fosters an environment of integrity, trust and excellence. Incentive programs, personal development, and the long-term relationships formed at BioTek contribute to employee wellbeing, making the company a truly great place to work.
